openSUSE Summer Camp Greece 2011

Summer in Greece! Is the weather too hot for you to code or contribute to your favorite FOSS project? Do you need some motivation and a refreshing swim? Come to our Summer Camp!
The Greek openSUSE community is organizing its first openSUSE Summer Camp, in central Greece at Grand Platon Hotel at Olympiaki akti. This is is the beach of the city of Katerini. The doors will be open from the 15th to the 17th of July 2011, at the Heart of Summer!

Sounds awesome, I’ll book my tickets.

So, you’ll be there. What can you expect?
Our goal is to bring FOSS communities closer and encourage people to contribute to their favorite projects.
A lot of people, with little to a lot of experience can benefit from the workshops included in our program, during which we will work on things like translation, wiki usage, coding, packaging and much more, showing how to work inside a community and how to collaborate with others!

Hmmm. But I could go swimming…

There will be relaxing and swimming of course! But hey, we have a common passion, don’t we?
We love what we do, we are having fun contributing to FOSS and we hate doing it alone in our rooms during Summer time. Besides coding, translating and all other ‘working stuff’ there will also be plenty of sun and beach, a large swimming pool and plenty of beers – all paid by you since we only sponsor the sun, the fun and all the other free stuff…

Η Ελληνική openSUSE κοινότητα και η παρουσία μας στην Fosscomm.

Η Ελληνική κοινότητα του openSUSE μεγαλώνει. Ίσως να μη μας ξέρετε ακόμη, όμως κάποια στιγμή σίγουρα θα μας ακούσετε κάπου. Γιατί τόση πυγμή; Διότι είμαστε μια παρέα με ηλικίες από 18 ως 30+, είμαστε διάσπαρτοι σε Λάρισα, Θεσσαλονίκη, Αθήνα και αλλού και μας αρέσει να περνάμε καλά! Διότι τι χάρη έχει κάτι εθελοντικό και κοινοτικό αν δε σε κάνει καλύτερο άνθρωπο και δεν το διασκεδάζεις;
Σκοπός αυτού του μικρού άρθρου είναι να σας κάνουμε μια μικρή παρουσίαση του ποιοι είμαστε, τι κάνουμε αλλά και τι θέλουμε να κάνουμε.
Αρχικά, είμαστε μαθητές, γιατροί, πυροσβέστες και κάθε λογής άνθρωποι. Όλοι είμαστε διαφορετικοί κι όλοι ίδιοι. Αγαπάμε, προωθούμε και αναπτύσσουμε το ελεύθερο λογισμικό. Το ελεύθερο λογισμικό απαιτεί και ελεύθερα κι ανοικτά μυαλά. Έτσι, μέσα από συνεννόηση, συνεργασία και κοινή προσήλωση στο στόχο της προώθησης του openSUSE και του Ελεύθερου Λογισμικού/Λογισμικού Ανοικτού Κώδικα (ΕΛ/ΛΑΚ) γενικότερα, έχουμε καταφέρει αρκετά, συμμετοχές σε φεστιβάλ, installation festivals, release parties, παρουσιάσεις του openSUSE σε σχολεία, πανεπιστήμια, workshops, μεταφράσεις αλλά και πολλές γραμμές κώδικα για τα project της παγκόσμιας κοινότητας του αγαπημένου μας OS.

Η φετινή μας συμμετοχή στη FOSSCOMM που θα διοργανωθεί φέτος από το Τμ. Μηχ. Η/Υ και Πληροφορικής, Πανεπιστημίου Πατρών, θα είναι η πιο ενεργή, πολυσυμμετοχική και ηχηρή παρουσία που έχουμε κάνει σε συνέδριο. Όλοι ανεξαιρέτως έχουμε προσθέσει τη δική μας προσπάθεια στη συλλογική βοήθεια, από παρουσιάσεις, ομιλίες, υποστήριξη του booth, υλικά και πάνω απ’ όλα όρεξη και μεράκι. Έτσι, όσοι μας συναντήσετε θα μπορέσετε να μας γνωρίσετε από κοντά, να μας ρωτήσετε για το openSUSE, να προμηθευτείτε το DVD με την τελευταία έκδοση του λειτουργικού συστήματος, με τα γραφικά περιβάλλοντα KDE, GNOME, Xfce και LXDE και για τις 2 αρχιτεκτονικές (32 και 64 bit) καθώς και να πάρετε έντυπες πληροφορίες σχετικά με την διανομή κι ασφαλώς θα δείτε τις παρουσιάσεις μας οι οποίες θα αφορούν το openSUSE OS , τα project τα οποία έχουν αναπτυχθεί γύρω από αυτό και στα οποία συμμετέχουμε (medical, E17) καθώς και μια σημαντική ομιλία από ένα μέλος της παγκόσμιας κοινότητας του openSUSE, Bruno Friedmann.

Τί είναι το openfest;

Είναι τo φεστιβάλ Ανοικτού Κώδικα και Ελεύθερου Λογισμικού, το οποίο διοργανώνεται τις ημερομηνίες 9 - 10 Απριλίου 2011 , από σπουδαστές του τμήματος Ηλεκτρονικών Υπολογιστικών Συστημάτων του ΑΤΕΙ Πειραιά και με την υποστήριξη του Εργαστηρίου Λειτουργικών Συστημάτων.

openSUSE 11.4 Release Party-The Next day

Last night the first Release Party for 11.4 of the Greek openSUSE Community took place. We had every reason to celebrate since we have this great distribution that attracted peoples attention from the first day of it's release.

Greek Customs (New Year's Pie)

Here in Greece we celebrate the new year except from gifts but also by cutting a New Year's Pie where inside there is a coin hidden. Whoever finds it wins a special gift and is meant to be lucky the new year. A local Linux User Group located in Volos called Volug and LinuxTeam Teilar in Larisa which both teams consist of colleagues had two small parties for cutting the New Year's Pie. I was there to celebrate with those people and inform them about openSUSE and openSUSE community. They were all interested about openSUSE distribution. I answered many questions about Tumbleweed and Evergreen and informed them about our new 11.4 and OBS as many of them where interested about the work that is done by openSUSE community and by the Greek Community. I had some cds/dvds and posters with me which i gave them. In the future we will make some events together. Unfortunately we did not took any pictures. I would slightly have won the hidden coin at the first party but the next person got it.

Greek openSUSE community report for 2010

This is the annual report of the Greek openSUSE community. As you all might know this  is the first report since we were formed as a community this year.

 Our first event of the year was the appearance at 3rd FOSSCOMM at 24th and 25th  of April. Greek Ambassador, George Koutsikos, participated with a booth. He with a team of people, were informing participants about openSUSE Project. He was giving away 11.2 DVD stickers and brochures.

Xariseto.gr Bazaar, December 28-29-30, 2010 - report

On December 28-29-30, 2010, we joined the calling from our friends from the web page xariseto.gr. They had a bazaar in Hortiatis, Thessaloniki (Greece). The place was far from our city but it was near for some people that live there.
Many people were bringing items they didn't need, but can be used by someone else that need them. You can see on the last picture what it was all about.
We were there to inform people about FOSS and openSUSE. We had a lot of people asking questions about it. Mostly they didn't know that there's something different than windows. We hope we made a difference even to 1 person.

1ο OpenFest Open Christmas στην Φλώρινα

Κάτι πολύ ενδιαφέρον όσων αφορά το ΕΛ/ΛΑΚ έχει οργανωθεί για ανήμερα των Χριστουγέννων από τον Σύλλογο Εκπαιδευτικών Πληροφορικης Π.Ε. Φλώρινας. Έτσι λοιπόν Στην κεντρική πλατεία της Φλώρινας Στις 24 του μήνα, σε ένα από τα ξύλινα σπιτάκια που έχουν στηθεί εκεί με αφορμή τις γιορτές, θα μαζευτούμε φίλοι του ΕΛ/ΛΑΚ και θα προσπαθήσουμε να δείξουμε στον κόσμο τα προτερήματα του ΕΛ/ΛΑΚ.

 Όσοι λοιπόν ενδιαφέρεστε να μάθετε παραπάνω για το ΕΛ/ΛΑΚ και να γνωρίσετε την κοινότητα περάστε μια βόλτα. Πιστεύω ότι προσπάθειες σαν και αυτή σε ακριτικές πόλεις όπως η Φλώρινα έχουν τεράστια σημασία και σπουδαιότητα και πρέπει να στηρίζονται από όλους.

 Ξέρω για σίγουρα οτι στην Εκδήλωση θα συμμετέχει ο KLUG και φυσικά η Ελληνική κοινότητα του openSUSE όπου όπως όλα δείχνουν θα ανεβάσουμε μια μικρή ομάδα, οποιοσδήποτε άλλος από κάποια κοινότητα ενδιαφέρετε να συμμετάσχει η να στείλει υλικό για την εκδήλωση μπορεί να επικοινωνήσει με τους διοργανωτές μέσω του μέηλ kiolalis@gmail.com.

Συνάντηση της Ελληνικής κοινότητας openSUSE σήμερα 20/12 Στις 22:00

Η Επόμενη Συνάντηση της Ελληνικής κοινότητας openSUSE θα
πραγματοποιηθεί την Δευτέρα 20/12 Στις 22:00 όπως συμφωνήθηκε στην
τελευταία μας συνάντηση. θα βρεθούμε Δευτέρα 20 Δεκεμβρίου 2010 στις 22.00, στο καθιερωμένο meeting της κοινότητας μας στο κανάλι #opensuse-el στον IRC server freenode.
Οδηγίες για το πως να συνδεθείτε στο irc μπορείτε να βρείτε εδώ [1].

Μην ξεχάσετε να ρίξετε μια ματιά στο πρωτόκολλο συνάντησης αλλά στην ατζέντα [2] του meeting καθώς και να προσθέσετε τυχόν θέματα προς συζήτηση, πριν την έναρξη του meeting.

openSUSE team supported scouts team to participate to JOTI-JOTA

openSUSE Greek team with Efstathios Iosifidis in association with GreekLUG, helped a scout team to participate to the JOTI (Jamboree on the Internet) of the JOTI-JOTA.

JOTI is an event that scouts from all over the world login to IRC and chat. It lasts 2 days. This year is on 16th and 17th of October. A team of scouts came to the university where we setup the computers to login to the Scoutlink server. First we had a short talk about the opensource and openSUSE since they had to use it with JOTI. After we informed the rules of IRC chat, they started to find new friends from Greece and all over the world.

Scouts got their PromoDVD copy and they were happy they joined this event.

openSUSE at the celebrations for the 100 years Scouting in Greece (report)

In October 1-3, we participated to the celebrations for 100 years Scouting in Greece. The last day was dedicated to animals since it was their world day celebration.

We were guests of GreekLUG. The main idea was to run a future park. Since the audience was mainly kids, we setup computers running network games and games in general.

As community, we made some Geeko origami some Geekos out of empty bottles and plaster. We also informed people about FOSS and openSUSE. Main concern of the adults was if it's easy and if it runs with windows dual boot.

We gave about 50 PromoDVDs and some leafs where they can find help in Greek.

openSUSE team at Xariseto.gr Free Festival-Report

 On October the 3rd we participated at the xariseto Free Festival.We were placed between Greeklug and the Fedora community Project.

A few words about the event:
The event had everything an Free open fest could have,music,theatrical teams ,places for kids to learn through games, free coffee, free clothes,free games and any other kind of items people stopped use and wanted to give away to others instead of throwing them away as garbage,also after the event what people didn’t take the xarise to team gathered it and gave it to institutions.

 On the 3rd of October openSUSE Greek ambassador Kostas Koudaras (warlordfff) will participate at Xariseto free Festival where he will inform people about openSUSE and give away openSUSE DVD's- Stickers and flyers, also there is a change for a last minute presentation of openSUSE but this will be mostly depend by the weather.

Educational Lecture: "Kids and Internet"

openSUSE ambassadors team in association with GreekLUG, on 27th of September, participated to an educational lecture with the subject "Kids and Internet".

The audience was medical doctors of the Paediatric Department of Ippokration General Hospital (Thessaloniki, Greece), and the main speaker was a member of GreekLUG, Dr. Constantine Mousafiris, Paediatrician-Neonatologist, Director of the Neonatology Dpt. of the Interbalkan Medical Centre.

The lecture was focused on various aspects of kids safety in the Web and the deriving benefits from the use of Free Software in the digital era education.

Our community was represented by Greek Ambassador Efstathios Iosifidis (diamond_gr). Our role was only at the end to inform that everything that mentioned at the lecture could be found on the DVD. The main question of most doctors to our ambassador was how they can install parental control.

openSUSE presence at the celebrations for the 100 years Scouting in Greece

Among 1-3 of October openSUSE will be a part of the celebration for the 100 years of Scouting in Greece as a guest of Greeklug.
We will again organize some games for the kids like origami and making Geekos out of empty bottles and plaster. We will also inform people about FOSS and openSUSE.

Our community will be represented by Greek Ambassadors Kostas Koudaras (warlordfff) and Efstathios Iosifidis (diamond_gr) for the first 2 days and in the last day only by Efstathios Iosifidis (diamond_gr) 

Software Freedom Day 2010 in Thessaloniki

On Friday 17th of September we represented the openSUSE community to a general speech organized by GreekLUG about FOSS at a elementary school at the center of Thessaloniki.
The speech was on Friday because on Saturday schools are closed.

The audience were teachers, parents and of course kids (ages from 9-12 years old). We had to do the same speech to 3 different classes. A representative from GreekLUG talked about what is FOSS and what are the benefits of using it.

Our community was represented by Greek Ambassador Kostas Koudaras (warlordfff). The speech was short and the subjects we mentioned were:

1. Distribution that is the leader of technology.
2. Large community around the world that develop the operating system but also help people to use openSUSE.
3. Developing Greek community.
4. There are many versions that everyone can use depending the needs.
5. There is educational software for the kids.
