Report from Xariseto.gr Bazaar, May 14, 2011

On May 14 2011, we joined the calling from our friends from the web
page xariseto.gr. They  had a bazaar in , Thessaloniki, New statue
K.Karamanlis (40.622943, 22.951405 in google maps).

Xariseto is a festival where people meet and donate their personal
belongings which they don't use any more. So as a Linux and openSUSE
community we thought that participating in these kind of festivals is
really interesting.

Me and Efstathios Iosifidis set up a booth in order to inform people
about FOSS and openSUSE project. We had  all the related stuff about
Gnome and
openSUSE  project around the booth (DVD's , Cheat Sheet, flyer).

Many people asked us about the project, but let me inform you about
these interesting questions...

1) What do you offer? What is openSUSE and FOSS?

2) Can i install openSUSE on my PC and also can i use my mother language?

3) Is it difficult to use?

4) Can i use openSUSE in order to write documents , watch videos ,and
surf in the  net?

5) Where can i found help and more information about the project?

6) In the past i installed SUSE 6.0. Now can i install and use the
openSUSE at the same way? (that was one of my favorite questions)

7) My daughter owns a netbook Ubuntu Linux installed, can i install openSUSE?

8) Free Software means Free language? (this question remind me Richard
Stallman's quote " Free as in Freedom")

So what did we have? What did we present in Xariseto Festival? Why did
we take part in?

* Event Date: May 14, 2011
* openSUSE Ambassadors: Efstathios Iosifidis, Rousinopoulos Athanasios-Ilias

* Event Details

o Tell us about the event, What did you do? We were informing people
about FOSS and openSUSE project. It's a good opportunity to pass the
word since it's crisis and people cannot buy new computers or
software.

o How many DVDs taken and distributed? About 60 DVDs. We also used the
file Greek help flyer

o How many people were there at the event. Uncountable.

o Did you have a booth? Yes

o Who staffed the booth? Efstathios Iosifidis, Rousinopoulos Athanasios-Ilias

o Would you go again? Yes of course!

o What more can you do to make it better?

Furthermore i would like to mention that people from all ages (i could
say from 7 years old to 70 years old) asked about the openSUSE project
, some of them knew about Linux and FOSS , and others found
interesting the idea of using an open source, free software and safe
operating system for their pc's , as well as to redistribute it to
other people.

You can find the photos of the event here :

Report from Fosscomm 2011

FOSSCOMM 2011 was held in Patras on the 7 to 8 May from Patras Linux User Group (PLUG) and the Department of Computer Engineering & Information Technology (Computer Laboratory / Computer Center), University of Patras. The conference was very interesting with several additional speeches, several parallel events (booths from communities and projects, parallel talks, workshops) and live streaming.

The Greek openSUSE community has united to present this two-day conference in Patras. There, we met people from other communities, discussed and promoted openSUSE and FOSS.

The community participated at the conference with the following presentations and parallel events:

Presentation by Bruno Friedmann, for the openSUSE project and its future.

Presentation by George Bratsos for the release of openSUSE 11.4 and the new technologies and innovations brought by the distribution.

Presentation by Kostas Koudaras who presented the Greek openSUSE community and their actions, the project dealt with and the events it has organized.

Presentation by George Koutsikos, for the Enlightenment Project.

Weekly News - The Greek way (Efstathios Agrapidis),
Evergreen Project (George Tsiapaliokas),
Tumbleweed Project (George Bratsos),

Presentation by Efstathios Iossifidis on how we can create an openSUSE distribution with SUSE Studio.

Workshop by Efstathios Agrapidis to create .deb and .rpm packages with OBS.

The openSUSE community booth was one of the largest in the organization and except the dvds, posters,, flyers, cheat-sheets etc. we co-hosted the booth of the Greek community of Gnome, the Enlightenment Project and the amazing people of other communities who were there to assist and promote their favorite project and FOSS in general.

On Saturday evening the openSUSE community had a Release party for the distribution of openSUSE 11.4 at the hotel where he resided. The party achieved its purpose because, apart from the cake we ate and the beer we drunk, we came closer to people from other communities such as the Ubuntu, Slackware, Gentoo, FreeBSD and OS-arena. At the end of the night Red Hat people visited our party, with whom we shared the same roof (hotel). :P

The workshop ended with a farewell message from the organizers of Fosscomm whom we thank for the wonderful organization even though the misfortunes of the second day which left us without power and wifi internet access for the most part.

Η Ελληνική κοινότητα του openSUSE μεγαλώνει. Ίσως να μη μας ξέρετε ακόμη, όμως κάποια στιγμή σίγουρα θα μας ακούσετε κάπου. Γιατί τόση πυγμή; Διότι είμαστε μια παρέα με ηλικίες από 18 ως 30+, είμαστε διάσπαρτοι σε Λάρισα, Θεσσαλονίκη, Αθήνα και αλλού και μας αρέσει να περνάμε καλά! Διότι τι χάρη έχει κάτι εθελοντικό και κοινοτικό αν δε σε κάνει καλύτερο άνθρωπο και δεν το διασκεδάζεις;
