First of all we created the Greek openSUSE mailing list and it turn out to become a great tool that helped a lot with the growth of the community. We started translating the wiki and also created and started to use the #opensuse-el at Freenode IRC channel. We decided there that we will meet every 2 weeks in he IRC to review what we did the past two weeks, to make announcements and to set new goals for the community. Also during those meetings the various work groups that exist within the Greek community give report to the community and take feedback from it.

One of the work groups we created was the Greek forum team and in co-operation with the global forum operators-moderators made the set-up of the Greek sub-forum.
The openSUSE Greek localization team was rejuvenated at 12th of May of 2010, by Kostas Boukouvalas, walking in and claiming the team leadership. Kostas had previous discussion with the predecessor, Vassilios Giannakopoulos who held this position for almost 6 years. The team was inactive from late 2007 and until 2010 no Greek translations were made for the distribution.
The actual work of the team started at November 2010, with the entrance of two new members, Michalis Vourlakos and George Bratsos. Michalis Vourlakos until now is the only one that has done translations for 2010 and has also started the first translation memory for the localization project. Kostas Boukouvalas dedicated his time writing a detailed introductory how-to on how someone can join and contribute to the Greek localization team, and how to start working on translations. This how-to will also be published as a part of an article at the fresh new GNU/Linux Greek magazine named "Linux Inside".

We also made big steps in the wiki translation. We started the basic documentation translation which is the base for all users and continued with other interesting articles.
We started translating openSUSE Weekly news in Greek(http://own.opensuse.gr/) and this was a great success. We estimate that at least 1000 people read it every week. We try each week for the best result. We have so far reached 7 issues and we are continuing... Late release Party for 11.3 at 11/3 |
At the end of the year an active member of the community, George Bratsos, joined forces as an Ambassador.
Efstathios Iosifidis and Kostas Koudaras made a lot of traveling and a lot of meetings with various important people of FOSS in Greece and not only. We also send openSUSE promo materials to various Lug's in Greece.
We went to Athens to meet Bryen Yunashko were we had discussion about our concerns and goals about the Greek openSUSE community and took some directions from Bryen's experience (http://www.bryen.com/kostas-and-stathis/).

For 2010 the Greek Community made almost 20% of the registered events for the openSUSE Project globally at 2010, although it is the newest formed community until today.
Four months ago we started a huge try that all thought it was doomed to fail. The community peoples actions and persistence prove all of them wrong.
